The annual datasets are free to download and cover eight themes over a period of five years. Each dataset is available for the UK as a whole or just for applicants from each of the four UK countries. The data is supplied in Excel version 5 spreadsheet format and can be used to create PivotTables allowing sophisticated and detailed analysis.
How to download the datasets
The datasets are provided as an executable program (.exe files) to ensure that they download to your computer as quickly as possible. This means that you will need to run the program from your computer to access the spreadsheets.
When you select a file to download, you will be prompted to save the file to your computer. Do this, following the instructions carefully. It is important to remember where you chose to save the file, as you will then need to run it from that location using your File Manager or Windows Explorer. Follow the instructions carefully to unzip the file and save the spreadsheets into a new folder on your computer beginning c:\ucas. This folder now contains your spreadsheet to open, manipulate and print.
Note that in some operating systems you can unzip the file without first saving it by selecting Open or Run instead of Save when you select the file to download. This will take you straight to the unzip process. Follow the instructions carefully to unzip the file and save the spreadsheets into a new folder on your computer beginning c:\ucas.
Creating a Pivot Table in Excel
We recommend that you analyse the UCAS annual datasets using Pivot Tables. These allow you to choose the rows, columns and filters you require in a table, and will calculate values automatically from the underlying data.
