How to prepare for and manage potential pitfalls

The road from school or college to higher education is a long one. We hope that everything runs smoothly, however it makes good sense to be prepared for the potential pitfalls.

As a parent, you have more experience of life and the problems you can encounter, so you are much more likely to be thinking about the "what ifs". If your son or daughter dives into something, full of blind enthusiasm, you are allowed to say "hang on a minute, let's think this through". Although your son or daughter may lose confidence because of the obstacles they encounter, having you to turn to for support will make all the difference.

There are some common problems that can be discussed and rectified, providing that you know where to go and how to help.
