The growth of lifelong learning in higher education

One of the encouraging developments in recent years has been the growth of lifelong learning. Increasingly, students are taking up courses at every stage of life. What was once seen as the preserve of the young is now rightfully an arena for all.

This section provides information on applying for university or college for potential students:

  • over 21 years in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and
  • 20 years in Scotland.

Throughout this site, we refer to people in this age group as 'mature students'.

This section provides specific advice and guidance for mature students which is not in other areas of this site. However, if you are aged below 20 years, you may still find this information beneficial.
