As the Gold Cup gets underway, don't forget the other big race in Cheltenham this week

14 March 2007

As Gold Cup fever hits the sedate town of Cheltenham this week, it's important to remember the other big race happening just across the road from the racecourse.

At UCAS' Cheltenham offices, staff have just pressed the start button on UCAS Extra. This is the opportunity for applicants who have received decisions on all of their choices, but haven’t been offered a place or who have declined all of their offers, to apply to courses which still have vacancies remaining.

With application numbers at record levels this year competition is fierce for university places but there are still thousands of opportunities. UCAS Extra works by allowing applicants to apply to courses one at a time between mid-March and the end of June. Courses are advertised using the Course Search function at ucas.com.

Anthony McClaran, UCAS Chief Executive, said "UCAS Extra has been our best kept secret since it was first launched in 2003 and it's definitely time it was better known. Last year 3,262 people were accepted on to a course through Extra, but there are still lots of opportunities to secure a place before Clearing starts in August".
